1979 Dawa Gyalje (aka Dawa Gyalzen), Nepalese Sherpa climber, who ascended Everest fourteen times (2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2018, 2019, 2021, three times in 2023 and 2025), Cho Oyu in 2009, Manaslu RP twice (2011 and 2021), Gasherbrum II three times (2016, 2023 and 2024), Gasherbrum I three times (2016, 2023 and 2025), K2 twice (2017 and 2022), Broad Peak Foresummit in 2017, Lhotse in 2019, Annapurna I and Manaslu M three times (2021, 2023 and 2025), Dhaulagiri I, Kangchenjunga, Makalu and Broad Peak in 2022, Nanga Parbat in 2023 and Shisha Pangma in 2024, where he finished all 14 8K Main-Peaks.


Gone on this day

1999 Jiří Šmíd, Swiss climber of Czech origin, who ascended Gasherbrum II in 1997, died in the Bernese Alps, aged 51.

Kangchenjunga Summits

Ludovic Challéat (41, France, 6th different Main-8000er), Philippe Gatta (42, France, 2nd after Everest) and Cedric Hählen (29, Switzerland, 2nd after K2) summited Kangchenjunga today.

Also Christian Stangl (K2 "fantasy ascent" 2010) and a Russian climber summited as well according to the report.

First Everest-Lhotse Traverse by Michael Horst

American climber Michael Horst, who earlier ascended Everest and Cho Oyu twice, stood on top of Everest and Lhotse within 24 hours. It was the first traverse from the top of Everest across the South Col to the top of Lhotse! Congratulations!

According to the report below he ascended Everest yesterday morning together with Rob Hart and this morning he stood on top of Lhotse!

Sad News: Japanese Climber Died on Everest

Takashi Ozaki (58), Japanese climber, who ascended Everest twice and five additional 8000ers (Broad Peak, Manaslu, Lhotse, Kangchenjunga and Makalu plus Shisha Pangma Central-Peak), died sadly yesterday on Everest.   

Again a great loss for the climbing community!

Our thoughts are with his family and friends!

Brothers Apa and Arita summited again

Today Sherpa climber Apa ascended Everest for the 21st time and improved his own record. Also his brother Arita summited again, for the 10th time. The brothers ascended Everest six times together on the same day: May 15th, 1995, May 20th, 1998, May 24th 2000, May 26th, 2003, May 16th, 2007 and today! The most ascents of Everest done by brothers were achieved by Kami Rita I (Topke) and Lhakpa Rita I, incredible 10 times! 

The total reported ascents of Everest to date are 29! There were nine on May 5th, five on May 6th, four on May 7th and eleven today!

Nine climbers summited Everest yesterday! This means, that the South Col-Route has 3000 ascents now, a new incredible record!

Among them was Sherpa climber Phurba Tashi, who now ascended Everest for the 18th time and, as he also ascended Cho Oyu five times and Manaslu once, he equals the record for climbing 8000ers from Juanito Oiarzabal with 24 ascents!


 

To date 70 ascents were done on a May 5th in climbing history! It was the fifth time in history and the third time in a row the first ascent day of the season!

Back in 1988 it was the first time with 12 ascents, in 1999 the second time with 20 ascents, which is still the first season ascent day record, in 2009 with 7, last year with 10 and yesterday with 9.
