1942 Reinmar Joswig, German climber, who ascended Broad Peak in 1984, Gasherbrum I in 1986, Nanga Parbat in 1990 and K2 in 1993, where he died on descent, aged 50.
1943 Gerald Roach, American climber, who ascended Everest in 1983 and Gasherbrum II in 1997. He also finished the Kosciuszko-version of the Seven Summits in 1985 and the Carstensz-version in 1994.
1955 Alexander (Sandy) Allan, British (Scottish) climber, who ascended Cho Oyu in 1997, Lhotse Nup in 2000, Everest in 2001 and Nanga Parbat twice (2009 and 2012), the latter by the entire Mazeno ridge.

Gone on this day

1997 Choi Byong-Soo, Korean climber, who ascended Cho Oyu in 1993 and Gasherbrum II in 1996. He died in an avalanche on Everest, aged 33.
2002 Marco Siffredi, French climber, who ascended Cho Oyu and Shisha Pangma Central-Peak in 2000 and Everest in 2001, from where he descended the Norton Couloir by snowboard. On this day in autumn 2002 he ascended Everest again and attempted to snowboard the most dangerous Hornbein Couloir. He has been missing since, aged 23.
