1987 Antoni (Toni) Sors (37), Spanish Catalan climber, who ascended Everest in 1985, and his Catalan companions Sergio Escalera, Francesc Porras and Antonio Quiñones died in an avalanche on Lhotse Shar.
1987 Adam Bilczewski, Polish climber, who ascended Lhotse in 1979, died, aged 53.
2003 Antoine de Choudens, French climber and adventurer, who was the only person, who skied to both Poles unsupported (North Pole 1996, South Pole 1999) and did Everest without bottled oxygen as well. He was the uncrowned "King of the Three Poles". He also ascended Cho Oyu in 1999, together with his wife Sandrine. He died at Pemthang Ri near Shisha Pangma in 2003, aged 34.
2009 Charles Snead Houston, American pioneer, who was a member of the expedition to Nanda Devi (7816 m) in 1936, which resulted in the first ascent of the mountain and was led by Bill Tilman. He also led two K2 expeditions (1938 and 1953). He died on this day, aged 96.
