1954 Hideji Nazuka, Japanese climber, who ascended Everest twice (1985 and winter 1993), K2 in 1990, Kangchenjunga in 1991, Cho Oyu in 1993, Gasherbrum I and II in 1997, Shisha Pangma in 1999, Broad Peak in 2000 and Dhaulagiri I in 2001. He died in 2004 in an avalanche on Annapurna I, aged 49.


Gone on this day

2002 André Roch, Swiss pioneer, who achieved first ascents of Baltoro Kangri V (c. 7275 m) in 1934, Dunagiri (7066 m) in 1939 and Satopanth (7075 m) in 1947, died, aged 96.

Italian pioneer and Polish mountaineer died

On August 6th, Riccardo Cassin, the leader of the successful Gasherbrum IV expedition in 1958, died, aged 100.

Yesterday the Polish mountaineer Andrzej Marciniak was found dead on Posrednia Gran in the High Tatras. He ascended Everest in 1989 and Annapurna I in 1996. He was 50 years old.
