Born on this day

1918 Norman Dyhrenfurth, Swiss-American mountaineer and film maker, who is the son of the pioneer and chronicler Günter Oskar Dyhrenfurth. He also was the leader of the successful Everest-expedition in 1963, where the first ascent by the West Ridge and the first traverse of the mountain was achieved. He died in 2017, aged 99.
1921 Gaston Rébuffat, French pioneer, who participated in the first ascent expedition to Annapurna I in 1950. He died in 1985, aged 64.
1945 Enric Font, Spanish Catalan climber, who ascended Gasherbrum II in 1980. He died in an avalanche on Manaslu in 1982, aged 37.
1951 Charles (Chuck) Armatys, American climber, who ascended Everest in 1993.
1951 Philip (Phil) Ershler, American climber, who ascended Everest twice (1984 and 2002) and Kangchenjunga in 1989. He also finished the Kosciuszko-version of the Seven Summits in 1989 and for a remarkable second time in 2002 with his wife Susan.
1953 Vladas Vitkauskas, Lithuanian climber, who ascended Everest in 1993. He also finished the Kosciuszko-version of the Seven Summits in 1996.
1955 James Edward (Jim) Holliday, American climber, who ascended Everest in 2011.
1956 Roberto Vazquez, Spanish Madrilian climber, who ascended Gasherbrum II in 1986. He died on Monte Rosa in 2004, aged 48.

1957 Wilhelm Filchner, German pioneer and explorer, who was in 1900 in the Pamirs, 1903-1905 in NE-Tibet and China, 1911/12 in Antarctica and several times between 1926 and 1938 in other Central Asian places. He died, aged 79.
1995 Michael Zunk, German climber, who ascended Manaslu on that day and died on descent, aged 35.
1997 Ivan Plotnikov, Russian climber, who ascended Cho Oyu in 1991, Dhaulagiri I in 1993, Makalu in 1996 and Everest in 1997, where he died on descent, aged 36. Nikolai Shevtchenko, who was on top of Everest as well, died also on descent, aged 52. Aleksandr Torochin, a third Russian climber from the same expedition, died by a fall on that day also. Mingma Tamang, a Nepalese climber from another expedition, also fell to his death.
2009 Lhakpa Nuru IX, Nepalese Sherpa climber, who ascended Everest in 2007, died on Everest, aged 33.
2010 Sergei Duganov, Russian climber, who ascended Broad Peak in 2007 and Manaslu RP in 2009, died on Lhotse, aged 43.
