1949 Frank Sydney Smythe, British pioneer, who achieved the first ascent of Kamet (7756 m) in 1931 and reached c. 8570 m on Everest's North Ridge without bottled oxygen in 1933. He died in London, aged 48.
1957 Hermann Buhl, Austrian pioneer, who ascended Nanga Parbat in 1953 (first ascent) and Broad Peak in 1957 (first ascent). He died 18 days after the latter on Chogolisa, aged 32.
2001 Anna Collet (née Apraxine), French lady climber of Russian origin, who ascended Shisha Pangma Central-Peak and Cho Oyu in 1998 and Everest in 2001. She died in a plane accident, aged 47.
