Born on this day

1900 Frank Sydney Smythe, British pioneer, who made the first ascent of Kamet (7756 m) in 1931 and reached c. 8570 m on Everest's North Ridge without bottled oxygen in 1933. He died in London in 1949, aged 48.
1902 Adolf Diemberger, Austrian mountain researcher and chronicler, who was well known for his research work about the Hindukush. He died in 1981 by a fall during a walk in his home hills, aged 78.
1912 Heinrich Harrer, Austrian pioneer, who participated in the first ascent of the Eiger North Face and was a teacher of the Dalai Lama. He died in 2006, aged 93.
1949 Stefan Wörner, Swiss climber, who ascended Manaslu in 1981, Gasherbrum II and Broad Peak in 1983 and Cho Oyu in 1988, where he died on descent, aged 38.
1952 József Straub, Hungarian climber, who ascended Cho Oyu in 1990. He died in 2002, aged 49.
1954 Winfried Krause, German climber, who ascended Cho Oyu in 1999.
1954 René Meier, Swiss climber, who ascended Gasherbrum II in 2008.
1958 Carles Vallès, Spanish Catalan climber, who ascended Cho Oyu in 1984, Everest in 1985, Broad Peak in 1988, Lhotse Shar in 1990 and Makalu in 1991.
1959 Michael Groom, Australian climber, who ascended Kangchenjunga in 1987, Cho Oyu in 1990, Everest twice (1993 without supplementary oxygen and 1996), K2 in 1994, Lhotse in 1995 and Makalu in 1999.
1961 Jörg Stingl, German climber, who ascended Manaslu in 1999, Everest in 2001 (without supplementary oxygen) and Nanga Parbat in 2004. He also finished the Kosciuszko-version of the Seven Summits in 2006 and the Carstensz-version in 2007.
1962 Charles Scott Clark, American climber, who ascended Gasherbrum II in 2003 and Cho Oyu in 2004.
1962 Sasko Kedev, Macedonian climber, who ascended Everest in 2009.
1963 Hans Buechi, Swiss climber, who ascended Everest in 2014.
1964 Francisco (Patxi) Goñi, Spanish Basque climber, who ascended Gasherbrum II in 1999 and Everest in 2001.
