| OROGRAPHY | Mainly used term for drawings of mountain ridge maps or route sketches. |
| | |
| OROLOGICAL DOMAIN | The area of a mountain's catchment basin, the "mirror" of a river's catchment basin -- mainly identical with the term Elevation Unit. |
| | |
| OROLOGY | Science of mountain comparisons, mainly used for the logical separations of elevation units. |
| | |
| OROMETRICAL DOMINANCE (D) | The percentuage of independence of a given Elevation Unit. Later other researchers also named another measurement "Dominance", it's the direct air distance to a higher peak. It is named "Isolation" in the USA. Because it is also used across water it's not useful in the science of orometry. |
| | |
| OROMETRICAL PROMINENCE (P) | The height above the saddle that connects a mountain to a higher one on the highest ridge connection. More details and other used terms in the text at the page PROMINENCE! The term Topographic Prominence is not useful, because it is also used for several other subjects! |
| | |
| OROMETRY | Earlier used term for calculations of average heights of ranges (1890: The orometry of the High Tatras). Recently mainly used term for mountain measurements such as prominence, dominance or impressiveness. |
